An economical Christmas dinner Sat 20 December 2008
Celebrity Chef Danny Millar, finalist of the Great British Menu on BBC2 in 2008, gave a day to Woodburn YMCA PAKT & Horizon Surestart . This formed part of their adult education and life skills programme ,to teach parents how to make a traditional Christmas Dinner at a price that suits your pocket .

Danny had become aware of the programmes being run through Horizon Surestart and Woodburn YMCA PAKT and the issues of cost running up to Christmas .As a result he offered his help in showing people how to make the best of fresh food at affordable prices . Once the local team heard the news they rapidly swung into action and got lots of offers of help in getting set up . A number of groups deserve a mention. Carrickfergus College ,with their community hat on ,immediately offered cooking and demonstration facilities ,but unfortunately could not provide creche facilities . So in stepped Sunnylands primary and Horizon Surestart who could provide both . They hadn't quite what was required ,so in stepped Brypol Electrical of West Street to provide an additional oven .

Danny did just what he said he would producing a three course Christmas Dinner, for the 24 people who attended the session , for £60 .38 pence .All made with all the fresh food and ingredients bought at the local Tesco.
He was ably assisted by his gorgeous assistant Kerry Cole who volunteered from the audience to help at the beginning of the session .
Danny kept up a running commentary with plenty of laughter through out the two and a half hour session , cooking every thing from the raw ingredients .
His chief tips were enjoy your food and get the kids involved early on .
After peeling potates and turnips for 24 people , Kerry certainly agreed with getting somebody involved early on .
After all the cooking everyone present got to enjoy a fantastic Christmas dinner ,the ham cooked in full sugar coke was particularly nice . ( Well it is Christmas )
Danny's recipe for cranberry sauce was ,1 litre of orange juice with 260 (half a pound )of sugar added boiled down to a fifth of its volume and then add 1 Kilogramme of cranberries and allow to boil down to a jam . It was delicious but remember that was for 24 people .
