Busy summer for the YMCA Woodburn/Sunnylands Parents And Kids Together group Sat 11 July 2009
It may have been wetter than expected but it has been all sunny smiles at the Summer scheme. The summer scheme started off with a Camping trip to Carnfunnock Country Park by 16 young people and leaders all led by Jeannie Mahood project manager. All had great fun around the park, and at the PAKT barbecue. Fortunately it only rained at night, but sleep appears to have been at bit of a premium especially for the leaders as their tent almost floated down the park.
After the return from the camping trip, it was straight into the PAKT summer scheme, which was hosted by Woodlawn Presbyterian church. The scheme featured a mix of educational and fun events for both the children and parents who are PAKT members. The final day had a grand finale of a go-kart competition and presentation of certificates to all those who had completed courses during the year. The build standard of the go-Karts improves every year and it is getting to the point where Formulae 1 design limitations will have to be imposed.
It was a good fun, but also a chance to say goodbye and thank you to the children and families who are leaving the project. PAKT would also like to say a big thank you to the Church volunteer team who helped with the after schools work and raised a lot of funds to allow summer scheme to take place. YMCA would also like to thank Carrick borough council and NIHE who help fund the Work of PAKT.
At the end of summer scheme, the project staff got down to a series of meetings to plan the next years work. This involves, publicity, meeting new parents, planning programme events, ensuring tutors and trainers are available for all the activities. They have got an excellent schedule of activities for next commencing in Sept. They include out door pursuits, personal development, and training for employment and health and well -being classes. The creche facility will open Monday to Thursday 09.30 am to 12.30 pm for all parents taking part in courses .The after schools group meets 3 .00 pm to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday as well. Jeannie will be busy in the area during August meeting with parents who may be interested in registering with the PAKT group.
