| Pharmacy Project |

Over the past six weeks the parents at PAKT Carrickfergus YMCA have been busy taking part in the "Pharmacy Project" which has run by the club. The PAKT club have been running the project to trnghten links between the pharmacy and the community. The project was ran in the Glenfield PAKT House from Tuesday January 27, from 10am to 12 noon.
Each week the "Pharmacy Project" taught the prents something different:
- Week one: they discussed Minor ailments, specifically affecting children i.e. coughs/colds, hayfever, diarrhoea, constipation, etc... They also discussed the availabiliy of Minor ailments through Pharmacy.
- Week two: in the first part the y discussed COPD and asthma - causes/treatments and outcomes. In the second part they discussed smoking cessation and the availability of such a service from community Pharmacy.
- Week three: the group discussed diabetes, both type 1 and 2. Causes/treatments and outcomes. And in the second part, they discussed healthy lifestyles including, healthyeating and exercise.
- Week four: the group discussed depression, causes/treatments and outcomes. and looked at non-medicated forms of treatments. They also looked at stress and anxiety. In the second part, they discussed the withdrawal of long term medication. And finished the session with a relaxation exercise.
- Week five: the parents finished off discussing Mental health issues such as self treatment of low mood and anger. In the second part the y discussed teenage problems suc as, puberty, sexual health, skin conditions, etc...
- Week six: in the final week, the parents finished off last weeks discussion regarding teenage health problems such as drug and alchool issues. And the couse finally concluded with a re-cap and desired topics such as minor ailments of childhood issues and ended again with a relaxation exercise.
All the parents who took part in the "Pharmacy Project" would like to thank Colin for supplying them with the medicare goody bags, which they received on completion of the course.
