| Carrickfergus Mayor Welcomes 'Youth in Action' Volunteers to Carrickfergus . |
Mon 28 September 2009 |
Mayor Patricia McKinney welcomed volunteers Jutta Kindzorra and Anna Willmann to Carrickfergus. Jutta and Anna who are both from Germany will be volunteering with Carrickfergus YMCA for the next six months. After reading about Carrickfergus and the various YMCA community projects on the web. They both applied to come here through the European Volunteering Service Youth in Action Programme. The idea of the scheme is to help young people develop and grow as individuals by getting them out into other European countries and cultures ,whilst working in community projects that bring a wider benefit to the community where they chose to go. The benefit for the YMCA and Carrickfergus is we get to learn from them about their communities and the way they solve problems.
Whilst with the Mayor they discovered the delights of scones with jam and cream which they though tasted great. They got a tour of the town hall and thought the ceremonial robes were great fashion pieces, but the greatest impression was made by the Mayors chains of office and the discovery that Ms Mckinney was one of the few lady mayors in the history Carrickfergus.
Anna will be working mostly with the Glenfield /Castlemara PAKT project and the Cheston Street Youth centre and Jutta will be volunteering with Sunnylands / Woodburn PAKT. They are really excited about being here and they have both said they have really enjoyed their first week getting out and meeting people.
YMCA would like to say thank you to the British Council EVS team for funding their stay and to Patrica Mckinny for taking time out of her busy day to welcome Anna and Jutta to Carrickfergus
