Goodbye guys! Tue 01 July 2008
The beginning of July will see the departure of Juliane Federolf and Valantina Mascilul, two of our three European volunteers who came to us through the European volunteers service Scheme (EVS ). Juliane who comes from Germany has been working in YMCA projects within Carrickfergus for 12 months and Valentina ,from Italy has been with us for 6 months.
They have worked in all three of our centres within Carrickfegus. Juliane loved working in the Glenfield PAKT ( Parents and Kids Togther ) project and especially enjoyed working with the kids in the after schools club. Valentina was much more at home working in the Woodburn PAKT project creche and it would be her intention to work in the area of child care when she returns to Italy.
It has been a challenging but enjoyable time for them as they were faced with coming to a new country with a different culture and language. They were also had to get used to the accent as sometimes we don't speak the most perfect English in Carrickfergus. They brought their own culture to Carrickfergus by running culture evenings or afternoons, however it has to be said that Italian food got a better reception than German food in the two PAKT projects when they ran a couple of cooking events.
Andreas Gerlach from Germany is our third volunteer, he is staying with the YMCA until the end of August to help with the summer programme. Andreas is a big football fan and until the final what makes him happy was watching Germany's performance in Euro 2008. He has been doing his best to get a supporters group going in the YMCA's Area 51 Youth Club, but with little success.
The EVS scheme, which is open to anyone between the age of 18 - 30 years, offers young people the opportunity to volunteer in another country, normally for a period of six to twelve months. A wide variety of placements can be found in the social, cultural, environmental and sports sector. The YMCA are really glad that they decided to come to Carrickfergus and want to thank them for their work and wish them all the best for the future. They go home with a lot of happy memories of the young people they met and in Juliane's case a decidedly Northern Irish accent
