Whitehead Youth Making Changes Mon 21 November 2011
Ten young people from Whitehead celebrated completion of their Bridge project programme with the YMCA. The celebration evening was hosted by Deputy Mayor Terry Clements and Alderman May Beattie who is chair of the Community Safety Partnership. The group have been working with youth workers from Carrickfergus YMCA on 16 week Young mens life skills project looking at a number of youth issues such as active citizen ship and drug and alcohol awareness. They also spent time learning about positive mental health and suicide awareness. Hopefully they would be able to spot and help other young people who are struggling with these issues.
The community police team also delivered a number of talks to the group about the impact of antisocial behaviour on the community and helped them develop skills to prevent future involvement in behaviours that could lead to them getting caught up in criminal activity.
The group was hosted by Whitehead NEELB youth club and Genesis Youth Club, who kindly allowed the group to use their sports hall and meeting rooms for the 16 weeks of the project.
Darren Whiteside the lead youth worker for the project said "they were a great group to work with and they really want to make a positive difference in the community". The young people who attended the awards event were John Strange, Stanley Fulton, Luke Anthony, Nathan Marcus, Daniel McCullough, Marcus Livingstone Dale Lough, Corey Reid
The Bridge Project is funded by the Community Safety Partnership and is a joint project with Carrickfergus YMCA, NEELB, Genesis youth club and the PSNI.
