Area 51 and Glenfield - Castlemara PAKT Teams get Trained Thu 18 June 2009
As a youth organisation one of the things that has to be looked out for is food allergies of people taking part in programmes, especially when teaching cooking skills. Following a recent near miss when a young person ate some fruit to which they were allergic as part of a meal the YMCA has undertaken staff and volunteers awareness training , making sure everyone is aware of the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction .This can start with very mild symptoms including a tingling sensation in the tongue and redness of the skin through to very severe symptoms such as a severe difficulty breathing and very swollen features . They have all completed the EpiPen Training. An EpiPen is a disposable, automated drug delivery system featuring a concealed needle. It is designed for self-administration of adrenaline in acute allergic emergencies (anaphylaxis). It provides a rapid, single dose of adrenaline to individuals experiencing potentially life threatening anaphylaxis. This is very serious condition and a person who goes into anaphylactic shock could die within 30 minutes therefore the Area 51 and PAKT YMCA group are now fully trained in how to administer the EpiPen.
The YMCA would like to thank Lorraine Brown, the community nurse based in Glenfield Community Centre for providing the training and advice on our procedures .
