Area 51 Summer programme Tue 11 August 2009
The last two weeks of July and First Week of August saw a group of young people participate in a summer intervention programme supported by the NEELB and Ulster Bank. The programme started with a over night camping trip and barbecue, followed by activities in the YMCA. The young people helped to draw up a programme of activities which included mural design, hoodie design and various art and craft activities, all designed to look at what's important to teenagers and also to dispel some of the negative sterotypes that young people has pushed upon them. During the Summer scheme some terrific pieces were created which will hopefully go into the new YMCA . The highlight of the event has to have the day trip to M&d's theme park in Scotland and the early start didn't seem to deter the young people from being full of energy even at 6am after a long day of roller coasters and water rides the young people returned slightly sleeper but still buzzing about the project as a whole. The young people had a fantastic experience trying new things and came up with a very powerful message as part of their hoodie and mural design. "All different, all equal" which proved to be the topic of learning throughout the course of the project though the element ot fun was never far behind!
